Dale K. Andrews is a professor in the Faculty of International Studies at Tohoku Gakuin University. After graduating from high school, he entered the U.S. Air Force. During six years of service, he spent 4 years in Okinawa. He graduated from Southern Illinois University where he majored in anthropology. He was awarded a PhD in religious studies from Tohoku University in 2007. His primary field of research is Japanese folk religion. His early research interest focused on Japanese shamanism. This expanded into a study of contemporary beliefs in rural society. Presently,  his research is focused on Japanese religious material culture, in particular the folk art produced by the fans of manga, anime, and digital games. Notably, he argues Japan has entered a renaissance period in which the “fans have taken the languishing craft of illustrating ema (wooden prayer tablets) and reinvigorated it with a vibrant, contemporary aesthetic” (Mechademia: Origins 9). He has served on the body of councilors for the Folklore Society of Japan and presently sits on The body of councilors for the Japanese Association for Religious Studies. He is also a member of the American Folklore Association. Doobity do wop wop say what yeah!
